Newcastle United and Birmingham City will go head to head at St James’ Park with both teams looking for a win to pull clear of the relegation fight.

Birmingham are currently four points above the relegation zone, while Birmingham are two points further ahead.

Mike Williamson and Hatem Ben Arfa are sidelined with injury for Newcastle, while Stephen Ireland is also ruled out.

Leading goal scorer Craig Gardner is suspended for Birmingham, while striker Nikola Zigic is out with a hip problem.

Newcastle and Birmingham have experienced real highs this season; Newcastle fans will always remember the 5-1 hammering of Sunderland and the incredible 4-4 comeback draw against Arsenal, while Birmingham fans are only just coming down from their Carling Cup final triumph.
But both clubs have seen their seasons peter out, with just one win between them in the last month. Newcastle have slipped into the bottom half of the table while Birmingham still need a victory to be totally safe from relegation.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew has promised an improvement on last week's 3-0 defeat at Liverpool, although injuries are hampering his side. The loss of defender Mike Williamson to a freak arm injury sustained in the gym is the latest blow.

Birmingham will move above Newcastle with a win but their task has been made harder by the suspension of top scorer Craig Gardner, who was sent off in last week's draw against Wolves. The onus may now be on former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips, who scored four times in six derby matches for the Black Cats.
