Season 10, Episode 33

A season-high 60 million votes were cast, but another singer's American Idol dream comes to a close. Ryan Seacrest tried his best to make us think we would be surprised at the result, and when that didn't work, he distracted us with ads for Bing and Steven Tyler's new book, and Hell's Kitchen. And the Most Beautiful Woman in the World performed (live?) on the Idol stage. So, who left us tonight?

But first: The Top 5, "Happy Together"
Call me weird, but this song always makes me think of Ernest Goes to Camp. I've seen that movie 100 times, and this overly breathy and terribly harmonized version of the song made me long for the campers' a capella take on the tune. Plus, that movie has a wicked food fight! Yes, the film isn't that great, but I'll take it over this performance any day.

A magic-themed Ford music video happened. And then there were some time-wasting bits about how the singers choose their songs (sponsored by Bing!) and about their wardrobe (James wears leather! Jacob's purple jacket was hideous!).

Then, the Idol singers proved who could take the heat in Gordon Ramsay's kitchen. They had to make an omelette in 10 minutes. And Gordon is so witty, he customized his critiques. Haley's omelette was "pitchy," because he pitched it in the garbage. (Get it?). James' was hard as a "rock" (GET IT?). Jacob's looked like vomit, Gordon spit Scotty's out, and Lauren is the winner. Jacob is the runner-up, because despite its looks, it apparently tasted good.

Lauren and Jacob face off in a taste test, which Lauren wins. What does she win? Um, best time-waster? See you in a few weeks on Fox, Gordo!

Lady Antebellum, "Just a Kiss"
This song certainly isn't a hit on the scale of "Need You Now" or even "American Honey," but it should be good enough to be on every radio station you can find this summer. Also, Idol hopefuls, this is how you do harmonies. This group sounds good every time I see them perform. Well done.

RESULTS
Once again, we get Jimmy's unique take (aka Simon Cowell-esque honesty) on the singers' performances from the night before.

James
Jimmy says he was overcome by emotion and his voice left him. For him to become a great performer, he has to get that under control. Although he's consistently been a 9 or 10, last night, Jimmy says he was an 8.

Lauren
Jimmy was ticked that she pulled back on the biggest note of "Unchained Melody." He says unless she gets her fear in check, she will be kept out of the finals. He also predicts she will be in the Bottom Two.

At this point, James and Lauren start separate groups on opposite sides of the stage.

Jacob
Jimmy says Jacob had a rough night, and that his nerves made both songs seem slightly off. (Slightly? Did you hear "No Air"?) Jacob joins Lauren's group.

Haley
Jimmy tells J. Lo not to ever question his decisions! OK, he doesn't but he points out that the judges were unfairly cruel to Haley's decent performance. But since Haley slayed the second song, Jimmy says that without a doubt, she was a 10 and won the night. He says if her confidence stays up, she is a lock for the finale. Haley joins James' group.

Scotty
Jimmy thought Scotty's slower song fell a bit short after the bold performance of "Gone," but he says his natural talent will make him a great recording star whether he wins Idol or not. Ryan reveals that Scotty has never been in the Bottom Two... and he won't be tonight either. He's safe.

Ryan tries to get him to choose which group he thinks is safe, and Scotty wisely refuses to play Ryan's game. So Ryan reveals that James and Haley are safe. Yay for Haley! James, who took Jimmy's comments really hard, falls to his knees in shock.
