Bangor City v Llanelli Preview

BANGOR City FC will aim to strike a psychological blow ahead of next month’s Welsh Cup final meeting with Llanelli when they take on Andy Legg’s side at Farrar Road in a Welsh Premier League clash today (2.30pm).
Neville Powell’s men ended a run of five matches without a victory by beating Gap Connah’s Quay 1-0 in last weekend’s Welsh Cup semi while Llanelli pipped The New Saints by the same score to set up a repeat of the 2008 final which City won 4-2 after extra time.
Now Bangor must re-focus their attention on the battle for the WPL title and three points this afternoon will keep them bang in contention.
They will have their work cut out, however, against a fourth-placed Llanelli outfit which has lost just twice in the last 18 league starts.
City welcome back midfield maestro Nicky Ward from suspension, but defender Peter Hoy is absent as he serves the second of a three-match ban. Centre-back Michael Johnston has trained this week and suffered no problems with a troublesome knee.
“We should be more or less at full strength,” said Powell. “It’s important we get three points, but Llanelli are always a tough side to beat.
“We should have won our last game against them when we were 2-0 up at their place with a few minutes to go. It was the best we’ve played for a while but we let them back into it and it ended up 2-2.”
Powell stressed last Saturday’s Welsh Cup success provided a huge lift for the Citizens.
“It was a massive boost which will hopefully spur us on in the league. If we win our next four games we’ll win the league and we’ve got to be positive.”
On reaching a fourth successive Welsh Cup final, Powell added: “We didn’t really mind who we got in the final. It’s just great to be there and whoever we’re up against it’s going to be hard as we’re the team everyone wants to beat in this competition where we’ve gone 22 matches unbeaten.
“With the final being in Llanelli they will have a few extra supporters there, but I’m also expecting a large contingent from Bangor there to be cheering us on and doing us proud as always.
