Haunted 3D: Movie Review:

Vikram Bhatt's fascination for horror continues, even as the Indian film industry -- and the desi viewer -- desperately awaits the first authentic bone-chiller from Bollywood. Is Haunted the answer to the chill hunters' prayers?

Not completely. And that's because the story is dog-eared and done-to-death. Almost every horror film has the wailing ghost of a nubile young maiden who sends outs desperate SOSs to anyone who dares to enter her domain. And don't we know why she's wailing! Still, we won't reveal the secret, which in any case, is hardly a secret....

But if the film works -- and it works quite well -- is only because of the special effects of the film. Experiencing the horror in 3D is indeed a novel experience for the viewer, specially since it is smartly done. Each time the ghosts lunge out at you, stick out their tongue or flail their limbs, you jump back in your seat. And yes, there are a lot of ghosts, performing a lot of ghastly acrobatics. There's even a snake sticking out its venom at you and a hurtling brick, almost missing your nose....Great fun.

Haunted 3D movie is Vikram Bhatt's most aspiringand most aspiring project till date.Haunted 3D is a story set in the dark mountains of Dalhousie. The movie revolves around the character Glen Manor who has a villa with a secret past and a haunted present. The lead Rehan visits Glen Manor villa to complete the sell transcations, which his father has initiated but couldn't be solved due to certain mysterious incidents. While trying to do, he finds the secret of the villa and falls in love with it.What he does not bargain for is that the secret attacks him to the biggest challenge and question of his life.

A young broker (Mahaakshay) has the arduous job of selling off a haunted house in the hills. But before he can do that, he chooses to exorcise the house of its shrieking ghosts. More interestingly, it means travelling back in time to re-align an unsavoury incident that occurred 80 years ago. Can the broker seal his deal?

In the misty mountains of Dalhousie stands the sprawling Glen Manor. A house with a secret past and a haunted present. Screams that shatter in the middle of the night and a ghoul that will leave anyone who dares headless. Rehan has bought the property and has already sold it further. Money, he stands to lose millions unless he can make the deal come through but to make the deal he has to first deal with the spirit that has the house in its grasp. As Rehan begins to unearth the bitter past of the house a name comes forth. A name with a picture and the girl in the picture is most beautiful. The name is Meera and Rehan wonders how anyone can fall in love with a picture and name. Till he discovers that the name and the picture was the cause of the haunting.

A viewer commented that perhaps director Vikram Bhatt had shot only a few reels of the movie that kept getting repeated through flashbacks. What happened to Vikram Bhatt who gave us the reasonably engaging Raaz and 1920? A word about Bhatt— his stint at horror (Raaz, 1920, Shaapit, Haunted) is getting progressively worse. Unable to imagine a story more misogynous, sick, and bizarre than this one, perhaps it’s time to request Bhatt to put a stop on it.

One has to talk about the 3D – this is India’s first stereoscopic 3D film and admittedly it’s a great format for horror. The cinematography adds to the visual abundance of the film. But filmmakers ought to appreciate that 3D or not, ultimately the viewer is looking for a great story, not gimmickry. And one certainly never imagined one would have to perch up the uncomfortable 3D glasses to watch the heroine getting raped and molested by assorted forms (human, spirit, spirit in female form...egad!).
