From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Arrested Development) comes Community, a smart comedy series about higher education -- and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, Community focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work.
This week’s episode of Community was the first part out of a two-part special (the second part will air next week and is titled For a Few Paintballs More, season 2 finale). To say ‘special’ is of course not too easy in the case of a series that demonstrates different style and theme very often, but this episode truly felt like aspecial.
On the outside, meaning the style, it was a special episode because of the paintball theme, playing like a wacky Western. It was not exactly a sequal, but we already saw the study group playing paintball in Modern Warfare (the 23rd episode in the last season).
“Paintball is tough this year”, says Abed, and maybe he’s right. Undeneath the paint and after all guns have been used – this is about Pierce, and how Annie feels sorry for the group having a secret meeting trying to exclude him from their study group next year.
I loved to see the characters playing war. Jeff and Annie, Troy and Abed, and of course Pierce with everyone else – it was Community in its purest state, the essence of war and social conspiracies.
The Dean was in his best, again trying to get Jeff into his shorts, but Abed was right when he said about Annie: “She’s pretty awesome today”. It was her episode, she was the one who saved Pierce from being excluded from the study group, and she was the one to attack Pierce once she understood he gave Jeff a gun with no paint inside.
Next week we will see the end of the paintball war, and maybe then our study group will be united (including Pierce and maybe even Chang) to defeat the giant waffle of the ice cream company.
