The White House has released the long form of President Barack Obama's birth certificate in response to festering questions about whether he was born in the U.S.
Saying questions about President Barack Obama's birthplace were a distraction for the country, the White House has released the original version of his birth certificate in response to questions about whether he was born in the United States.
The certificate of live birth says Obama was born in Hawaii, which makes him eligible to be president.
Obama had earlier released a standard short form, but questions had been growing from so-called "birthers" who believe he was born elsewhere.
At a news conference earlier today, the president says he decided to put out the long form certificate to end the controversy distracting the country.
"I know that there's going to be a segment of people for which, no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest. But I'm speaking to the vast majority of people as well as to the press," Obama said. "We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We have better stuff to do. I've got better stuff to do."
The certificate, released Wednesday, says Obama was born in Hawaii, which makes him eligible to hold the office of president. Obama had earlier released a standard short form, but requested copies of his original birth certificate from Hawaii officials this week.
Why, if Obama was born on August 4, 1961, was the “Date Accepted by Local Reg.” four days later on August 8, 1961?

• David A. Sinclair, the M.D. who purportedly signed the document, died nearly eight years ago at age 81. So he is conveniently unavailable to answer questions about Obama’s reported birth.
